 A Nephrologist specializes in the management of patients with a wide range of renal disorders which include glomerulonephritis, renal cancer, hydronephrosis, etc. Occasionally, Nephrologists may also perform transplant procedures in some patients or assist a surgeon in performing the transplant surgery.Nephrologists are medical professionals who diagnose, treat, and manage acute and chronic kidney problems and diseases. They also treat associated issues like high blood pressure, fluid retention, and electrolyte and mineral imbalances.Career scope in nephrology: Candidates aspiring to become Nephrologist must possess a 5½ years MBBS degree followed by 2- 3 years M.D. (Medicine) / DNB (Nephrology) course. As a nephrologist you can specialize in pediatric nephrology and adult nephrology.To be successful as a nephrologist, you should have experience working with patients in this field, be a critical thinker, and have a passion for the task. Ultimately, a top-notch nephrologist should be compassionate, committed to delivering high-quality care and have good communication skills.However, a nephrologist is not a surgeon and typically does not perform operations. Treatment of kidney cancer, prostate operations and removal of kidney stones are usually handled by a different type of physician known as a urologist.
